Privacy Policy

Last updated: September 24, 2026

Word Bank (the "App") values your privacy. This policy explains what information the App collects, how it is used, and how it is protected.

Information We Collect

Word Bank does not collect personally identifiable information. No sign-up, email, or name is required to use the app.

Data the app processes:

  • Learning progress data — Review progress, Leitner box state, and other learning data are stored only in local storage on your device.
  • App settings — Most settings, such as theme and review reminder times, are stored only on your device. The exception is your learning language, which is also synced to our server when you use the "Expression Recommendation Notifications" feature (see below).
  • Push notification token and learning language (optional feature) — If you enable "Expression Recommendation Notifications" in Settings, your device's push notification token, learning language, and time zone are stored in Google Firebase and linked to your anonymous user identifier so notifications can be delivered. This data is used only for notification delivery, and turning the feature off deletes the stored token.
  • Anonymous user identifier — The app uses Google Firebase Anonymous Authentication. A randomly generated anonymous ID is issued without sign-up and is not linked to a specific individual.
  • Usage analytics — Events for key in-app actions (screen views, adding words, completing study sessions, reading stories, etc.) are sent to Google Analytics for Firebase to help improve the service. Events include only statistical information such as language codes and study mode — never word content or personally identifying information.
  • Word search queries — When you look up a meaning or example, your search term is passed through the app's own server (Firebase Cloud Functions) to the Google Gemini API for processing. No user identifier is included, and the request is handled anonymously.
  • AI-generated word data — AI-generated meanings, examples, phonetics (IPA), synonyms, and antonyms are cached in Google Firebase. This is a shared cache used to speed up repeat lookups of the same word, and it is de-identified data not linked to any specific user.
  • Word correction feedback — If you report or request a correction to a word's content (meaning, examples, synonyms, etc.), the word and your feedback are stored in Google Firebase. Stored feedback may be periodically aggregated and used for AI analysis to improve service quality. It does not include your name, email, or other personally identifying information.
  • Error reports — When the app crashes or encounters an error, device information (OS version, app version, where the error occurred) is sent to Sentry's servers. Depending on the error, the word or sentence text you were entering at the time may also be included.
  • Subscription information (Premium subscribers) — Payments are processed by Google Play, and the app never receives card numbers or other payment details. To check your subscription status, your anonymous user identifier and purchase information (product, purchase/renewal/expiry dates, purchase token, etc.) are stored with RevenueCat and Google Firebase.

App Permissions

The app uses the following permissions. It does not use sensitive permissions such as camera, location, contacts, or microphone.

  • INTERNET — Looking up word meanings and displaying ads
  • POST_NOTIFICATIONS — Showing review reminders
  • RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED — Restoring notification schedules after a device restart
  • VIBRATE — Notification vibration
